Witch way to go

For managers and decision makers it is kinda hard to find the best way for their companies. Even the “Cloud” version is out the scope of this book I will ask you a very few questions and you should be able to decide very easy.

First of all you have to understand the definition “Cloud”. The “Cloud” simply is one or more servers on the Internet, operated by different people. There is not “one Cloud”! Everybody is able to setup a server on the Internet, offering space or services like e-mail or similar and name it “Cloud”. So there are millions of “Clouds” and marketing departments found a great name to get people used to save their data on foreign servers they do not control. Funny part of it, if you ask somebody to save data on Internet servers, mosts says, no, I would not do it!

The first question I ask customers if they come up with the idea of putting their data and services into the “Cloud” is always the same.

“Remember a few years ago. A new supplier visits your company and ask you to print out all of your customers data, contacts, CRM notices, sales and forecast reports and put everything in his car. He promises you that he will not read or use any of your data. He finally tells you, that it is for sure better he has all of your data, than they are in your company.”

The project of this e-book

This book will show you how to setup all required systems and services to offer anonymous and secure Tor Hidden Services.

Firewall Setup

We will setup a firewall based on a FreeBSD minimum installation. This firewall will work on most old PC’s with 3 network interfaces or a virtual machine running on Top of VMWare, KVM or Virtual Box.

The Tor daemon will run on this firewall and handle the connections between the Tor Network and your Tor Hidden Services system.

The Firewall will block all traffic from your Tor systems to the clearnet without using the Tor Proxy. We also setup a DNS Proxy using the Tor Network to avoid DNS exploits.

This way, even your system offering the hidden services is fully hacked or compromised, all requests are running through the Tor Network and you are not unmasked because of it. Furthermore, the hacked system only knows its internal 10.x.x.x address and there is no way to find out the real IP address.

We will create a management network, able to access these systems only. Management network is operated on an internal IP range too. There is no way to access the clearnet. Management Network can use the Tor proxy if needed.

Tor Hidden Service setup

We will create a system running the nginx web server to anonymously serve content on its own .onion address.

Because of running the services on a different system we can add as much systems, servicing Tor Hidden Services, as needed.

The Management Network

You can use any system running the Tor Browser Bundle or Tails Linux inside the management network.

Introduction to WordPress

What is WordPress

WordPress is one of the widely used and well known Open Source CMS (Content Management System). The Project started 2003 and the software is used for small personal home pages up to Fortune 500 websites. WordPress is Open Source Software and usage is free of any license costs.

Is it more then a CMS?

WordPress started as a blogging system but meanwhile it is a full content management system which is fully customizable. Thousands of plugins and themes are available to enhance the core system.

I would say its even more then a CMS, because you can add a fully blown shop (e.g. Woocommerce), a feature rich social network engine (e.g. Buddy Press) and much more.

DARKNET FOR JOURNALISTS

A trip to another world

Learn how to safely visit and use the Darknet

You will learn how to enter the Darknet using the Tor Browser or Tails Linux. Secure, encrypted and anonymous communication using Bitmessage and PGP, Bitcoins, Tor Proxy and more will be known after reading this e-book. Lot of images and instructions.

The Darknet has a lot of good sides too! Read on!

Introduction to the Darknet

What is the Darknet

Especially people without enough knowledge about computer and software spread the wildest speculations ranging from wet dreams to real bad boys stuff about the Darknet.

Let me explain the technical side the easy way. The Darknet is build on top of the wider known Internet. Special software is needed to access the so called overlay network.

To keep it technically simple imagine the Internet as street and the Darknet as car on it. The car needs the street to be able to move. To be able to enter or use the car you need the key to it. Without key, in our case the software, you have no access to the car, in our case the Darknet.

The Darknet by itself is a transport layer only. As with the car, you can move with it, but it doesn’t offer services to you, except moving.

For making sense to users there must be services offered by the Darknet. Most of the services are some peer-to-peer connections (friend-to-friend, e.g. for file sharing) or privacy networks like Tor.

There are friend-to-friend networks like Freenet, GNUnet, I2P, OneSwarm and others out there. But the focus of this e-book will be Tor (The onion router).

Tor is an anonymity network and secures your privacy  as much as possible. With the “Tor Hidden Services” the most popular instance of the Darknet also features a dark web.

A dark web is WWW content only available using special software like the Tor browser.

Introduction to IoT

IoT (Internet of Things) short info

The Internet of Things (IoT) will massive change the world of IT professionals. Machine-to-machine communication, home automation and other new ways of communication or management will deeply move into the business and private world.

IoT is the next multi-billion dollar tech market where IT professionals will meet people from home automation, office and production automation, PLC (programmable logic controller) developers and transportation engineers. All of them are fighting for their part of the market.

Customers wants to switch heating on or off from their smartphone in the same way as they want to control home or office lights, doors, cams and even the fridge. Not enough, they want the lights go on the time they arrive at home, wants to see the location of family members or business staff on maps and far more.

Machines will communicate with machines to securely drive without a human, order missing food in your home and alert in case of emergency.

Developer, designers and managers already have $ signs in their eyes every time thinking about the M2M (machine-to-machine) market.

In the past services offered on the Internet mostly was unprotected and traffic was sent in clear text between server and user. Firewalls was unknown to most users.

Times has changed now, spying on traffic and hacking is all around. Actually it needs less than a few minutes to have the first bots trying all of their exploit scripts against your IP address. Never think you are not important enough for hackers because in the first step bots operates on IP addresses without knowing who is behind this IP address. Things will be exploited pretty fast.

A modern firewall with strong security, combined with other prevention methods like transparent proxy servers scanning for viruses, using modern and state-of-the-art server technologies is a must for every system connected to the Internet.

After using this great solution a long time I finally wrote this e-book for you.

Setup of this guide – Our Goal

This guide will show you how to set up a pfSense firewall in a few minutes. We use a virtual machine setup, but you can use any new or old PC and embedded systems whatever suits you best.

I am not sure we really want to have that way of control and communication entering and changing our personal live that much, but we will have to live with it and so we have to deal with the security of IoT.

Introducing a fully featured Open Source Software, available as source code and binary version for Windows, Linux and MAC.
